Wapping Project

26 May - 08 July
SeaWomen focuses on a community of female sea-workers living on the island of Jeju - a volcanic rock between S.Korea, Japan and China. It’s a fast diminishing community of 50-90 y/o women who dive to great depths with no oxygen supply to catch sea-food and find pearls. Karikis’s immersive installation depicts the unique sounds of their ancient and transgenerationally-transmitted breathing technique, their work-songs and the noises of their decision-making debates. The project witnesses the women’s insistence on sustainable practices operating outside industrialization; their reversal of traditional gender-roles, their deep sense of community and their professional identity and purpose in later age.

Organisation housed in a stunningly refurbished Victorian Hydraulic Power Station (1890), a graceful miniature of the London main industrial art spaces based in the capital's vibrant East End, which still boasts much of its original hydraulic equipment and machinery. The venue is known for its original approach in combining the arts with its industrial nature; the project is a tuneful conversation among large scale site specific art works and fine architecture and food which creates a matchless atmosphere.
