Studio 1.1

18 May - 10 June
In Clare Price's work what's never certain is which will win: composition or decomposition. In these new paintings an underlay of simulated pixellation reinforces a firm structure, an armature almost, that alludes (maybe - it's only an allusion) to a mapped-out landscape. In the foreground, a layering of pentimenti, rough brushstrokes and the signs of an occasional flung paint-pot do their best to deflect easy assumptions, as an overload of drips and forced error rescues gesture from the apparently cold 'process' of the computer-generated imagery.

studio1.1 collective began in July 2003 with no particular battle-plan. We have evolved with a range of shows as diverse as possible, presenting artists at any stage of their career, from any country, in any discipline. Our commitment is to the work itself, and to fostering the three-way relationship between artist, artwork, and viewer; looking for what Cage, in another context, called ‘the quality of encounter’. Art isn’t a distraction, or an act of consumption, but a relationship.
