Combine your contemporary art fix with exploring East London's back streets, vibrant markets and the hippest shops, bars and restuarants. Below are some recommended itineraries from leading writers, curators and directors of the London art world.
Director, Museum of London
There is no greater pleasure than a free evening with the city before you, with its inimitable, illimitable diversions and temptations. I would start close to the Museum of London and follow in the footsteps of radicals over the centuries who have gathered in Clerkenwell. The Zetter, near St John’s Gate, is a great place to meet up and hatch plans. If I could resist the wonderful foie gras at Club Gascon in Smithfields, I’d wander through the layers of the City, rooting out the Roman remains and archaeological treasures which resonate with the voices of previous Londoners. Near the Temple of Mithras, The Walbrook club, tucked behind Wren’s exquisite church of St Stephen’s, is a convivial gem. Heading east, the extraordinary but easily overlooked charnel house, preserved under Bishops Square, is a quietly moving testament to medieval devotion. I’d stop by here before losing myself in the irresistible riot of life and architectural splendour that is Spitalfields.
