In her paintings, Noel Basualdo explores very particular looking individuals as models, whose image does not sit easily with the viewer. Being interested in the idea of misinterpretation, she likes to play with suggesting and conveying difference and is particularly concerned with the idea of subverting traditional portraiture heritage, by choosing unconventional subjects. Her primary aim is to create images that are intriguing to the viewer, drawing their attention and curiosity through an intimate yet deceiving portrait.
