In/flux private view. Wed 2 Sep 6-9pm.
In/flux is an exhibition of new works of art and design exploring everyday experience in Hackney as a catalyst for critical/creative practice. Presented in a former furniture showroom on the thoroughfare of Kingsland Rd, in/flux takes its inspiration from Hackney as a place/space in transition. Curatorially, this research-led exhibition contests normative notions of the ‘group show’ as a dispassionate scheme for exhibiting the works of individual artists and designers. in/flux instead situates the works produced for this exhibition in a broader community of Hackney enthusiasts intent on understanding this complex cultural context through sustained engagement. Curated by Marsha Bradfield and Miriam Kings.
In/flux brings together works by twelve selected artists based in or around Hackney; juxtaposing sculptures, paintings, moving image work and further art and design objects.
A program of free forums will accompany in/flux to elaborate upon themes arising from the exhibition. A) Artist round table discussion; comments from project participants; curatorial reflections on in/flux as a hybrid platform for displaying art and design work and/as research about Hackney. B) The culture terrain of contemporary Hackney. C) The challenges and diversity of socially engaged art practice and its impact on Hackney's culture, politics and economy. Everyone welcome.
